I, like so many other things, noticed this and thought it worthy of a post and a question. I have never seen or even heard of a CDS with the word "Garrison" on it. Can anyone maybe shed a little light on it for me? I'd be much obliged. I think it's very interesting for the time period but I know nothing more about it. Thank you.

There is a town of Garrison, MN.

To be fair though many states have a town named Garrison

Look at the U.S. partial CDS to the left smauggie. That's why I thought military. Not too many CDS have USA on them.

A quick look at Jim Forte's postal history website shows that the following states had a town named "Garrison" during the period this stamp was current: Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia. Good luck with all that.

I don't think the cancellation has anything to do with the military.

From the bottom portion of the right CDS, I think Pennsylvania is the winner!

Maybe I'm the dissenting opinion here, but I'm not so convinced it's Garrison, PA. The characters at the bottom of the postmark don't look right to me.

Here's an idea: Could it be "Garrison, NY" on the top of the circular stamp; with "Parcel Post" at the bottom? The use of an 8-cent stamp back in that period and the look of the stamped characters in the postmark make me think that might fit.

No telling for sure, though.

I think wt1 may be right. I couldn't find any Garrison examples but here is a San Diego example of a complete postmark.
