OK, here you go.

1847's ID chart for Type Ia.-
http://www.1847usa.com/washfrank/2c...2cType1a.htm

The page:

The one I have marked Sc #500.

I realize that the cancel obscures one of the identifiers, but I can make it out under magnification (my 30x loupe) This is the best I could do. {1200dpi}
I'm relatively certain that I got correct however, I'm also very aware that I have only been fooling around with these for less than a year so I realize that chances are pretty great that I may have gotten it wrong. I only wish I hadn't jumped the gun on marking it in one of my albums..lol

If your sure that it isn't, would you please share with me why ? Just so I know what to be looking out for in the future.

Just a notation here:
When I'm I.D.-ing these I don't have the Scott catalog in front of me but rather the 1841 website. Catalog value is almost completely irrelevant in my little world unless of course I'm buying something. Thank you very much for any light or any tips and tricks you can offer.

Here is one that I didn't use the "straighten" function on as I think it lends to the blurriness of the scan. I have a better scanner down stairs if you need a 2400 or I think 3600 dpi image.

Here is the one I suspect is a #461. I believe it's the correct type Type I. and a single line watermark.

I'll take it out and put it my little S.G. gizmo to attempt to photograph it for your scrutiny. I just want make sure that the hinge is completely dry so I don't cause a thin. My detectamark does not work if there are hinge or fragments on the back. Thank you.

Just based on these scans, your 500 appears to be a 499. The scans are a bit blurry and indistinct, but the toga rope and button do not appear to be sharp and heavy enough to be a 500. On the majority of the 500s, the toga button outline really stands out strong. You can go to www.seigelauctions.com, use the power search, enter the catalogue number 500, and pull up 500s that have been in their auctions. Use the image magnifier to enlarge the images and compare it to your stamp. If your 461 is flat plate printing, perf. 11x11 and has a single line watermark, it should be a 461.

Fair enough on the 500 but I actually have another possible one to look into further later on. I'm pretty sure that is a 461. It has the right color (although it don't really show right on the scan). It certainly is a Flat plate printing and has most of the "P" from the single line (wmk 190) perf 11.

I didn't want to burst your bubble on the 500. The 461 sounds good if you see a good part of a watermark.

I wish yours had been a 500. I found one in a mixture a while back. Thats what makes the hunt worthwhile. I've a couple of others that may be 500s; not all 500s (Seigel auction sight) are as pronounced as other----though all should be pretty well defined--- that I may send to Weiss for an opinion. I'm happy for you on the 461--I've been looking to find one for some time now.
