Silk paper has 4-6 threads per stamp and I have yet to find the color. One source said they were black and another said red.
Continental silk paper has numerous small linen or cotton fibers visible from the front and back of the stamp. Occasional colored fibers can be found in examples of earlier US stamps up to the Continental Bank Note period. Such stamps are not silk paper. While Scott lists the 6 cent continental stamp (Scott 159) with blue fibers, I am not so sure. The small fibers in Continental silk paper could be blue or black, but they look black to me under a 15 power loupe. Some 24 cent bank note stamps have been reported as resembling Continental silk paper. So far it has not been possible to establish that these stamps are Continental Bank Note printings. It also should be noted that National Bank Note stamps with occasional fibers do not have characteristics found in the slightly softer Continental silk paper. So why is the 24 cent stamp different?
