I can't help with the stamps but it's nice to see that it was sent from a US town called "Ayr" so it has Scots connections at both ends of its journey.

Hi jony78, it's a very attractive cover. The stamps are common issues of 1895 or 1898. It's almost impossible to tell if the 2 cent are type III or type IV. The 1 cent are definitely 1895. It really doesn't matter value wise.

Any Transatlantic cover with 6 stamps is a real curiosity, even if they're common; a premium cover.

I think the UPU rate was 5 cent art the time. Maybe it was double weight?

There are two other covers in the lot with similar destinations in Scotland,both with the 5c upu rate,strip of 5 1c as above and a single 5c garfield,

Extract;
This townsite in Section 11-141-54, Ayr Township was founded in 1883 and named for James Dunlop, manager of the Park Bonanza Farm which donated land for this townsite. The post office was established October 17, 1883 with Frank H. Dickinson as Postmaster. On December 4, 1883 the name was changed to AYR, but an error by postal officials resulted in the name being approved as AYE. During the period necessary to correct this error, efforts were made to change the name to ELGIN, but on January 7, 1884 the name AYR was approved, and the ELGIN name was declared invalid in 1885. Dunlap is an erroneous spelling.

Im starting to believe its quite a curiosity,not a bad find for 25p anyway.

and I still have more to look thru ;)
