I have a lot of stamps on paper from the 1970s that also have a machine cancel. This bag is about 3 lbs.
I know some people collect machine cancel slogans, cities, dates, etc.

Should I:
Soak the stamps off the paper to save space in my closet?
Sell the whole thing on ebay?
Use the stamps for an art project?

The soaking of stamps might take a month or so.
Do I organize by date?

I am looking for suggestions on what to do with a bag like this.

Thanks

Don't soak it. If you put it on ebay let me know.

Thanks pjsstamps.
Is there a special name for stamps and machine cancels cut this way? I don't think I would call this kiloware.

What is the term that you would use for stamps and machine cancels cut this way?

Postmark collectors sometimes cut the upper right corner of an envelope to a 2 inch by 4 inch size, called a 2X4, to keep the entire postmark intact (date stamp and killer).

While full envelopes are preferred, this is a common way to collect postmarks.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
I collect for enjoyment, not investment.

I should have read your post more carefully. You asked how to organize them as well.

There are almost as many ways to organize a postmark collection as there are collectors.

The most common organization is to sort them by state/city. Some collectors are interested in only pre zip code (1963) or post zip code and others separate slogan cancels (Pray for Peace, etc.)

There aren't any hard and fast rules.

Please don't waste your time soaking them off. You have not added one dime of value.

I have the infamous "barrel" of such and similar items, and every year or two I throw them into a deal, free, especially if it's a gee-whiz kid just getting started. Or a scoutmaster or schoolteacher. My time is way too valuable to spend even one minute of labor on them. Right now, I have a sizeable box of sprayed-on cancels I'm thinking about dumping into the barrel; my only hesitation is, a few spray cancels are rare. Too bad I do not know which ones, as someone arrnaged them in alphabetical order.

Doug,

There is a niche market for postmarks, including spray-ons.

If you don't want to mess with your batch, you might consider donating them to the postmark museum.

If you are interested, PM me. If the museum wants them, I'd foot the bill for postage.

Dan beat me to the reply. to get the most money for them divide them up by states and lot them out like that. You will be suprised what some of these lots will bring. If you have Alaska, Hawaii or Minnesota you will likely get a bid from me. I also prefer full covers, but I have ton's of 2x4 cuts. Early machine or slogan cancels may also bring a premium.
Good Luck

Thanks pjstamps. I did like you told me. I started going through the pile. Most of the postmarks were from California. I found 45 postmarks so far from Hawaii, and put this small collection on ebay.
