This cut square looks most like Type U1, with its short label with curved ends, and printed on diagonally laid (buff) paper. However, the thick, squat lettering looks nothing like the illustrations in Scott. Is this a known variety?

This is a worn Die 1. There are 12 types described in the UPSS 19th Century Catalog.

Excellent, thanks. Any particular value? It's the first one I've ever seen. Is it considered damaged because it's cut so close?

Cut close but still cut square, this would be classed as below average with an adjustment of catalog value to about 10% of Scott assuming there are no other defects. The trapezoidal shape cannot be improved without cutting into the stamp design. Various working dies have varying values but worn dies do not command any premium.
