My 2 cents is if you want to sell then support. However if you want to buy 50 post is a good learning curve. As far as the trade aspect I think that should be open to 50 post both ways provided no $ trades hands (that is hard to control of course) . |

While I at first didn't like the new policy of having to be a supporter to sell here, I DO understand WHY it was started. Running a website costs money. If no one clicks on an ad, no revenue is earned to pay for it. So you really have to look at both sides and find a happy medium. My only real problem is a lack of funds right now, otherwise the $5 would be no problem. Then again, I wouldn't have much to sell worth more than that! If I may use a comparison that no one here will understand but me: Web-forum users are like AMC owners - they can have a car worth a lot of money, but they expect parts to be free. As for typing before thinking, I TOTALLY understand. My boyfriend told me a while back NOT to type in anger. Wait a while. OR, type it all out as a Word document, then wait again. It has worked a few times for me. |

Perhaps I should explain why I was so angry. I had gotten and email from one of our Life Insurance Companies to purchase a new or additional Life Insurance policy. After filling out a long application. I am not a typer. I am a two finger pecker. Anyway I received a telephone call from some other Life Insurance program in about two minuets of closing the application trying to sell me Life Insurance. A company I had hardly ever heard of. Not Met Life whom I had originally filled out the App for. Then after typing a long list of SE-Tenants and stamps I wanted to buy from anyone in the Buy Sell Section of SCF. SCF wouldn't let me post because I was not a "Supporter" That is what made me so angry. I knew you had to be a supporter to sell but didn't know I had to be one to buy. So all my typing/pecking was for naught. I am now a supporter. It wasn't the $5 it was the principle and all my pecking for nothing. |

Ah yes, the 2-finger method. Sounds like you just plain had a bad day... |

I understand the reason why SCF needs support and I don't disagree with the policy, however I think the particular policy may result in less support than other policies, like a commission-based sell policy. I bet SCF has already considered other policies and this has been hashed out many times before, but I'll express myself anyway.
Other sites (for example boardgamegeek, BGG) do not tie support with buy/sell or trade (they do have a sell commission but trade is free). BGG likely has many more members and maybe implementing a commission in SCF is probably more time consuming than its worth, but...
The disadvantage of tying support to buy/sell/trade (lets call it the marketplace) is some members may defer support until the need to use the marketplace arises. Members may also consider the support a fee for use of the marketplace rather than support for the site. I see evidence of this regularly in the language and sentiment expressed in posts regarding this policy. I understand it is support, but I also cannot get past the notion that it is a marketplace fee.
Now, I happily part with my money when supporting BGG, but never use their marketplace. I would like to use SCF marketplace and wouldn't mind a commission, but I am reluctant to support until I get around to using the marketplace (which could be years given my busy schedule), so I defer support. For me personally, this (personal) dilemma of support vs fee would go away with a commission-based system and I would then happily part with whatever support level I think is fair for the content alone.

I have never looked back because I joined this forum.
I can understand what everyone is saying in here. What I really would like is a simple "YES" or "NO" to my question regarding the 50 postings rule before you can buy / sell / and or trade. Is this now redundant?
Having stated this, I would be more than willing to make a donation to the SCF forum. Can anyone let me know where to send the funds and, can this be done through a Paypal account or by money orders only??
Always glad to help.

Quote: BUJUTSU: does the old rule that you need at least 50 postings to trade is now redundant (????) I'll try to answer that question; although if you read it carefully, I think there must be a typo or logic-slip in there that makes a Yes/No answer difficult. Yes, members are still required to have at least 14 days of membership and 50 quality posts before they are eligible to participate in ANY buy, sell, or trade activities.
After the 14-day/50-post requirement is met, members may reply and respond to threads in the BST forums. In order to create or initiate a BST thread, the member would need to go one step farther and become a Site Supporter. Hope this helps, Kirk |
