That's a bit of a surprise - just announced via beyondtheperf:
https://www.beyondtheperf.com/2013-...verted-jenny
$12 face value is a bit of a turn-off for sure.

I like, BUT... I am sure there will be no intaglio printing on it. Also the $2.00 value is a little odd. ALSO, for an agency in so much debt, all that extra selvage art (which isn't all that great... the man could have been drawn better) is a total waste of paper/liner/adhesive.

A nice water activated, semi-engraved version would have been far better, but that is just my opinion...

I agree with the previous comments and would just add that as a device to encourage stamp collecting, the use of a $2 stamp is not a very good idea.

It's probably going to be something collected by the philatelic community and a few airplane enthusiasts more than anyone else and will be forgotten from most beginner collections, primarily because as a "souvenir sheet" you can't buy just one stamp, but have to pay for the whole $12 sheet even if all you want is just one stamp.

It will be curious to see what the final print run for the stamps are to be. I suspect we'll also see press sheets at a hefty price, too.

While the USPS has qualified the announcement with the note that this is "preliminary artwork" and "subject to change", here are the images as posted:

On Facebook:

Quote:
It's back! Perhaps the most famous error in the history of U.S. stamps - the Inverted Jenny - will be featured on a souvenir sheet to be released later this year. Reprinted with a $2 denomination to make them easy to distinguish from the 24-cent originals, the Inverted Jenny stamps will commemorate the many ways a single stamp can turn a moment in history upside down. (Stamp design shown reflects preliminary artwork and may be subject to change.)

On Beyond the Perf:

Quote:
This souvenir sheet features a new version of perhaps the most famous error in the history of U.S. stamps: the Inverted Jenny, a 1918 misprint that highlights the ways a single stamp can turn history upside down.

The sheet includes six Inverted Jenny stamps, reprinted with an updated denomination and surrounded by an illustration that includes the National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C.; the route of the first regularly scheduled airmail service between Washington, Philadelphia, and New York; and aviation pioneer Reuben H. Fleet, who was in charge of the first group of airmail pilots.

Originally issued on May 14, 1918, to commemorate the start of the first regular airmail service the following day, the original Jenny stamp was designed to show a Curtiss JN-4H, or "Jenny," the biplane used to deliver the mail. However, one sheet of 100 stamps that mistakenly showed the biplane upside down was sold on the first day of issue to a collector in Washington, D.C. — and one of the greatest philatelic treasures in U.S. history was released into the world.

The art director for this souvenir sheet was Antonio Alcalá. The selvage artwork was created by Steven Noble.

The new Inverted Jenny stamp is being reprinted with a $2 denomination to make it easily distinguishable from the 24-cent 1918 original.

Already there are variances in the designs, as the "2013" date in the upper left corner is in red on the Facebook design and in black on the Beyond the Perf design.

For those who didn't catch it in the news release posted earlier in this thread, the Inverted Jenny Souvenir Sheet isn't being issued until September ... more specifically Sunday, September 22, 2013. It may work out well for the dedication of the Stamp Gallery, but for most of us it means we can't buy them or get any unofficial first day of sale postmarks on them for the date of issue, since it's a Sunday.

Looks like pure $11.80 +/- profit for usps. They gotta do something to generate cash and as long as they don't do 10 million it makes perfect sense. 100,000 issued is another million++ in the bank or congress or wherever all their money ends up.
I do like the muscle cars as well.

Yet another money grab by USPS. I expect the press sheet to be made available, too.

Had they made it into a simple forever stamp, probably would have done good for promoting the hobby.

Can't complain too much, though. After all, they could have made it a $20 stamp.

Now,wouldn't it be cool if they printed a couple of sheets right side up by accident? Then the regular jenny would be worth a fortune!

WOW! .... USPS in USA begins to create stamps just as CORREOS in Spain ... to print stamps with high facial values only for sale, not to for postage.

On a positive note, September 22nd is on a Saturday (not Sunday as previously noted) so there is hope for those seeking unofficial first day covers.

EDIT: I stand corrected!

If you look at our SCF "Event Calendar" on the Home page, the first day of the "week" is Monday, not Sunday; why, I don't know.

Interesting about the SCF "Event Calendar". I never checked that one. I merely clicked on the clock on my PC to check the date.

On another related matter to the Inverted Jenny reprints, the USPS Stamp of Approval blog carries this statement:

Quote:
The original engraved dies to produce the 1918 Inverted Jenny are being used in the design to produce the new stamps.

Although I'm not really sure what that means in terms of seeing a more "engraved look" to the upcoming stamp reprints.
