Hello,[I have edited this as suggested] I am VERY new here[today]. I recently inherited a folder of many full pages of stamps from the 60s to present. Actually my mom and I reguallarly picked up sheets and stored them. In them, I found a real nice full page of 8 cent Boston Tea Party stamps that the black, red, and possibly the yellow are WAY off center, up in the perforations. Are such pages more valuable broken up or as a real nice complete page? I guess the question is, for that era, are they worth more as is, or broken up or should I just use them? Is there any value here? Basically, I would like to know what you would do, how should I proceed. I am looking to sell them but what is the best way? Auction, Ebay-singles, blocks, or full sheet? I probably can put pictures in, if anyone asks. Thanks for your time and any help, Karl.

Pics for sure but usually mis registrations of colors unless very dramatic are not uncommon. Forgot to say welcome- Grab a beverage and join in the craziness!! |

Welcome to the group. As Nitrolures states, pictures are always welcome. In fact, a scan is the best option, usually with a black background, but white may work depending on the color of the stamp. There are various FAQ subjects to help you work your way through the issue. We love to see new problems/questions, so go ahead and post away ... |

Sorry guys, but this is actually one of the harder forums I have tried to navigate through. I hope I pt this in,reguarding my earlier post? I will try to add a picture. As far as I am concerned, I believe this is a "dramatic mis registration of colors"? I THINK, there are a couple of things that are OFF on this page. So, IF it is an error, is it better to sell as a page or seperated? My guess[being new to this]is that every one broke these into sets of 4 and full pages are rarer? SO, is it of any value? H ope this picture is big enough for you to see it clearly? Thanks again, Karl. |

Those are EXCELLENT examples, with lots of eye appeal, and would bring a higher-than-average price on ebay. If you sell, they should be sold one block at a time. I wonder if they're in Stephen Datz's book on EFOs? |

Cool, I was able to post a picture. Honestly, to put it plainly, these stamps are a mess. Until I found a picture of a correct stamp, I really couldn't see what these stamps were trying to depict. Anyway, I am on a low budget and am hoping to find a couple extra $s. Aree these stamps of any value as a page or individual stamps or? Thanks yet again for any help and please ask questions, Karl. |

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how should I tear them apart, IF I wanted too with out doing any damage? Normally, I would just go at it. They would do what they are suposed to do but it always seems that under pressure[on me], they would tear poorly and I would damage something. |

Let's not tear ANYTHING yet; we are just talking what-if's. There's plenty of time for that later. Tonight you will undoubtedly hear other points of view. Do you have one complete pane of 50 stamps, or more than that? |

I have just the 1 complete[50] very nice sheet. I'm not cutting or tearing anything until I feel there is a reason to do so but I always find it baffling how the sum can be more valueable than the whole? |

That is a beautiful sheet. Not only is the red and yellow shifted, but one of the blacks (>) is way out of place! Scott numbers here are 1480-1483. Just for giggles, why not send the scan to Jack Nalbandian and see what they offer? They are pricey, but maybe generous also (??????) They do show a large variety of color mis-registrations on their websites, and less spectecular stamps than your are prettyhigh.

I have 100's of pages of stamps but never got into "stamp collecting" as such, so please excuse my ignorance, who's Jack Nalbandian and how or why would I contact him? Any suggestions where I should go next? Anyone N.W. of Philly, Pa. that I can take it to for apprasial? I am putting in another picture under sunlight gives it a different look. It really is a little hard to tell what's going on. Looks like there are 5 colors? The blue background looks good. I think the yellow is actually in place . I think there is a dark blue that is OK also . The red and black are off . Sorry for my opening post. Actually, although there is a lot going on on this forum page, after looking around, I was able to navigate through it fairly well. Thanks again, Karl. |

I don't know that an appraisal will do you any good. Sales of comparable blocks/panes, maybe. Your pane of 50 will yield 10 blocks of 4, plus 5 pairs. There are many more error collectors likely to pay (say, $50) for a block than a single collector willing to pay (say, $300) for the pane. And the plate block deserves a huge premium, much more than the other 9 blocks. Clearly, however, there are cases where a full pane is worth much more intact. If someone shows up with a pane of the 90c of 1869, for instance (priceless), you would never break it up, one reason being that there are mint singles readily available. As far as I know, no sheets have ever been discovered; there may be a sheet of proofs in the National Postal Museum, but it is, of course, not available to collectors. The number of panes like yours will never be known; there may be just one, there may be a hundred. You will ultimately have to choose whether to (1) sell it intact, to a dealer or deep-pocket collector, (2) sell it on ebay a block at a time, or (3) send it to auction and let a stamp company do the work, for a percentage. I hope we see comments on all 3 choices. Back when William Weiss was running auctions of esoteric U.S. material, he would have been the ideal auction house. |

Now that is extreme if I do say so. Surprising that made it out of the print shop and likely there may be 10-50 more somewhere as the printer would have been adjusting (dialing in each color) usually until its all set the stuff like that should hit the recycle bin or shredder. Could be middle of the run where pressman just stopped paying attention and vibration will move the registers (I used to be a printer). Either way that is a Holy crap cool sheet you have and you need to move smartly - Price could be from $50 a block to god knows what if at the right auction for the whole pane. Your in the drivers seat but as you mention you are low on Cash but try not to let that have you make a rash decision. If you can use/ borrow a scanner and do a 600-1200dpi scan you will be farther ahead in sending the high res images to potential prospects. If you get the scans you can host them on photobucket and copy the img code in the forum to show full details. I am in Canada so don't have a list of prevelant EFO (errors freaks and odities) collectors or dealers but saskatoon stamps does love errors just not so sure on US material. Theres no right answer but you should really take your time as this looks pretty substantial. Dare I suggest even contacting seigals auctions?? |

Crack, I gave you the name of a dealer in the North-east of the US, in Rhode Island. Google Jack Nalbandian stamps, and he will be the first hit! Good luck,
Peter |

Just a thought- you can edit your subject line to something along the lines of SCott #1480-83 major color shift error. Have to hit the edit button on your original post to change. This way it will be more relevant in searches both here and through google. |
