I run across a nice little lot the other day and I'm very interested in it. I noticed that one of the cancellations looked too modern and dark so I first looked at a lot of different resources [ http://bob.trachimowicz.org/ucanpdf.htm I thought it would be in here for certain, but no suck luck] -and finally decided I'd contact Mr. Frank Kaplan (Mr. Fancy cancel) about it. I sent him a scan of it and told him of my suspicions and failed research attempt to locate it and he replied this morning.
(His reply is at the bottom of this post)

The cancellation in question:

The lot it came out of:

The reply from my inquiry on that cancel:

Quote:
It is very suspicious for two reasons-

1. There is a pen cancel under it

2. It may be too sharp to be a 1861ish cancel.

Does the cancel show through to the back - if so it is probably

Made by a modern vinyl handstamp. Rubber stamp ink.

I thought so because the ink of that time "looks blotchy" and the corks were not usually that ornate and even if they was it would still look a lot different than that and not so sarp. Also there is aa double-line pen cancel just underneath it.

The 30c Navy official might be the best item there (row 3, stamp 2). Looks like a nice copy.
