Hello,

I'm having trouble determining which stamp this is. It looks very close to Scott #RD63, but mine doesn't say "Series 1940" on it. I found a picture of a one that is marked with "Series 1940":

As you can see in the photo, my stamp looks like it has been canceled with "Jan 23 1929"

Any help would be most appreciated.

bonfire!
Also, the reason your stamp doesn't say "series of 1940" is probably because it was an earlier issue that was overprinted to use up old stock of them.

1940 is the year that the Documentary "reds", Stock Transfer "greens" and Silver Tax "gray" series each started. From 1917 until that time all stamps for those taxes were undated; I believe the government wanted a tighter control on where and how much money was being collected. Since the new red, green, and gray stamps were not yet available, the current high value documentary stamps which had already been overprinted for the various taxes were provisionally handstamped "series 1940"(the lower values were overprinted rather than handstamped).
These handstamps have been faked, the control numbers play an important role in determining the genuine from the fake as does studying the genuine handstamps.
