... I went out and bought one of those Harris bags of 300 U.S. stamps on paper at the local Hobby Lobby. The price of these babies is a whopping $6.99, but I used HL's 40% weekly coupon to knock this down to $4.50...a cent and a half per stamp. I just finished a quick look-through.... As expected, the mixture is heavy on recent definitives and Christmas stamps with a smattering of commems from the mid-1970s forward. Not very many, though. There was one token old stamp: a 9 cent'r from the 4th bureau issue, but it had a missing corner. The thing to keep an eye out for in these mixtures are plate number coil stamps. This bag yielded 7 different ones, mostly on the 37c flag stamp. All in all, I found maybe 2 dozen stamps in the lot that I could fill holes in my collection. (7 of these were the PNCs, of course.) Now, I will go through the whole pile a little more thoroughly to see if there are any subtle surprises.
