Hi!

I'm filling out needed US MNH stamps for my US collection. Browsing on ebay, I have come across the Scott number with a small "v" after it. I suspect that means "variant" (???) but obviously I'm not certain. And if it does mean that, why not use the Scott A or B or proper designation? I may be wayyyy off base here, and look for you all to clarify.
Thank you!!

'V' stands for 'variety' or 'variance', meaning the stamp has an unlisted difference from the normal stamp. This fits into an area of collecting known as "EFO" or, Error/Freak/Oddity, of which there can be an infinite number of stamp varieties that will never be catalogued.

Depending on what your looking at the "v" could mean type 5 but 99% will mean variant or variety.

There are a few instances where the regular Scott number includes the small case "v". For example, United Nations New York Scott 1005v, one stamp from the One Planet One Ocean souvenir booklet. Panes and stamps from this booklet are numbered from 1005a through 1005ad.

Regards,
Robert

If it is a coil, it could refer to the Imperforate Flat Plate Coil Stamps (page 545 in the 2013 Scott US Specialized). The numbers for the vertical ones are supposed to end with a large V, but people are often sloppy.

But in most cases I would expect the v to mean variety

When in doubt, ask the seller. Some sellers can be quite creative in an attempt to add value, others are just misguided or misinformed, others are just creating their own abbreviations
