So many news articles on the subject (both for and against) but this has got to be the best concluding quote:

I know one way the P.O. could save probably a Million Dollars in one year and not disrupt any postal delivery. The past three years for example. The P.O. has issue over 300 new stamps. The dies probably probably cost $250,000 for each stamp. CUT THE NEW ISSUES DOWN TO FIFTY. That alone would save millions of dollars in one year alone.
