Found this on line the other day with only 1 bidder @ .99˘. I threw in a snipe of $2.00 and won it. Looks like a hand written receipt for $50.00 with a postage stamp used for a revenue stamp ? It's alos from the town of my Alma Mater.

Is the parenthesis over the stamp, while the stamp is over the 'Co.'?

Bank Note issues are well known to have been used illegally as revenues. The parenthesis over the stamp while the stamp is over the Co. is certainly possible, the document would have been written out, the stamp put on, and then someone felt the dollar value should be enumerated as well as written.
The handwriting of the dates match, the ink matches, and two cents is the correct tax for this receipt. I see nothing to make me suspicious that it might not be genuine. Even with the crease $2 is pretty cheap for an illegal usage, in this condition it's probably a $10-$15 item.

I see what you mean. It's just an optical illusion caused by a stray perf. The stamp was place over the writing.
