James William Denver (1817–1892) served in the California state government, as an general in the United States Army, and as a
Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives. He also served as Governor of the Kansas
Territory. The city of Denver in western Kansas Territory (the present-day state of Colorado), was named after him.

Since he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California's 1st congressional district from
1855 to 1857, this cover sent from Vallejo, California to Washington, D.C. dates from that time period.

The 10c overland rate from California to Washington, D.C was paid with this Scott #14 imperforate green Washington.

Have you ever thought that when people in mid 19th century mailed a letter that it was somewhat of a miracle it got delivered? Especially from west coast to east coast, and before the transcontinental railroad.

This is another cover I found from the James W. Denver correspondence. It was sent
from St. Louis, Missouri on September 3, 1857 and is addressed to Hon. JW Denver,
St. Joseph, Missouri. St. Joseph was a frontier town located on the border with the
Kansas Territory. At the time, James Denver was Secretary of the Kansas Territory.
In December 1857 he was appointed by President James Buchanan as the Kansas
Territorial Governor.

The docketing says:

"Forward this to Denver if not in your city."

The Scott #11 3c Washington imperforate stamp is the claret brown shade.
