I have the first run of the NH commemorative "Old Man in the Mountain". My father was the postal equipment technician that was responsible for installing and calibrating the first day cover canceling plates in the machines on that day. I have the calibration runs he used to setup the plate. They are on plain white envelopes. There is other memorabilia from that day such as photo, signed placemat from the dinner they had that day, etc. I'm 70 now and trying to declutter. Don't know what to do with these. Any other information needed?

Foiler- A kind welcome to the forum. Having any piece of postal history especially with great provenance is special. There may be more sentimental considering it was your fathers work at hand but I am sure we would love to see pics/ scans of the items if for nothing else than discussion and details. See what you can do for pics and we will be happy to look them over.

I'm not astute at loading pictures. I'm 70 now and these things are of little interest to me. I would be glad to make an attempt at putting photo's of this collection here if I knew how to do it.

My advice would be to try to market the covers to a specialist collector of that issue, if you can find him/her. Collectors of all things New Hampshire might also be a good outlet.

This is the type of material that would appeal to a First Day Cover specialist. These items are essential ingredients for an exhibit or collection. I don't know if anyone is collecting this particular issue but you might want to contact the American First Day Cover Society. The members of the executive should be able to provide some guidance.

AFDCS Executive Director is Doug Kelsey, an old friend of mine from Columbus, years ago.

Tell him Doug Swisher referred you, then invite him to join SCF.

Not to take anything away from this board, but there's another discussion board with a very strong following among US FDC collectors, including many of the officers of the AFDCS. (In fact, the founder of that board is the current president of the AFDCS.)

I would post there:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/stamps/messages

either in the "First Day Covers" folder or in the "Buy/Sell/Trade" folder.

I'm sure someone would have an interest, or know who the specialized collectors of that issue or that kind of ephemera are.

Like here, you do need to register on that site (Delphi) in order to post, but it's relatively simple. Make sure you don't pay for anything. Just the simple Delphi membership/registration is all you need. Someone there is also likely to be able to help you with the images, once you make your post about the material. Unlike here and some other boards, you don't start out as a probationary participant.

I'll look for your post over there!

Another option for your material is a donation to the archives or reference collection of either the American Philatelic Society or the AFDCS, the first day cover society, who, btw, keeps their archives at the APS.

That issue is collected and is desirable to collectors simply because the old man in the mountain isn't there anymore. It fell down a few years back and things like this are now considered cross collectibles. Just a thought.

Edit: Type-O
