Hi all

While trying to find something in my cover album, I noticed that the three covers I have with 3 cent Washington imperfs have stamps in three different colors! Now, I am in NO way an expert on the early US issues. I decided to scan all three at the same time, at the same %, and let you all take a peek at them.

As always, I'd like to know folks' thoughts!

This is just one step towards identifying, just narrow possibilities by color, then look at specific details, e.g. re-cut frames, this website can help you more specific: http://www.theswedishtiger.com/10-scotts.html

Not able to plate but 1st stamp is oxidized and isn't plum, which is a lot rarer than pigeon blood pink on the 1861 3c issue.

Stamps one and two are both 11A and stamp three is #11

Hope this helps, Ray

Oxidized?? Now how in the Wide World of Sports do you know that?? Perhaps better scans are in order to help folks out, seeing as the second chart also makes things confusing!

(well... for ME... which is easy)

OK, here is a much larger scan of the darkest 3-center for you all to look at:

I'd appreciate any other info from the pros here!

the yellows, reds & oranges will oxidize over time because of exposure to atmospherical pollutants. looks like it could be an oxidized orange brown but, I personally favor claret.

Nells250, scroll down almost to the bottom on this link and you will see actual stamps depicting the actual color variants. With this you will be to at least get it into the ballpark.

I'll take a poke at them for you:
1st - Deep Claret, 2nd - Copper Brown, 3rd - Orange Brown~(or maybe brown as the images are too small to more accurately see.)

That part of the Swedish Tiger site does little more than muddy the water. Other parts are even more dangerous. I wouldn't send my enemy there.

None of the three stamps posted in this thread are good or even fair examples of ANY color. The first two are pretty badly sulfurized. The third stamp is probably a little sulfurized and looks to be a poor impression.

I would imagine the first stamp is a '52 brownish carmine or a '53 dull red. Could also be a '57 claret.
