Hello again stamp gurus! Which Scotts Stamp Book should I buy to get the most and best information on U.S. stamps ? The Classic Specialized or just the Specialized. I'm looking f or something that will give prices on everything like... blocks, EFO's, mint or un-used stamps with out adhesive/glue and also fancy cancels. Well I believe I will need a different book than Scotts on the Fancy Cancels but still would appreciate the help. Again, you gurus are the best.
Thanks

There really is no one reference that covers it all. I would start with Scott Specialized as it covers the most ground.

Scott U.S. Specialized was on sale last week by Amos Advantage; I bought a copy. Get on their email list, it may happen again. Odd that they would put the latest edition on sale 6+ month before the next edition comes out. Maybe they printed too many, or they just aren't selling in the recession.

How about this book. United States Cancellations 1845-1869 (Aps Handbook) - Hubert C. Skinner; Hardcover

I don't own it but I have seen it mentioned here.

There are some cancellations in the Scott's Specialized Catalog too.

Hi,
If you are talking USA only, pick up a Scotts specialized cataloge on ebay for an earlier year. I got a 2012 volume that is new for $12. If you are talking "the world", then it gets expensive, although earlier years are available on ebay. Pricing for the most part appears to be close for what I've looked at for the last 10 years or so - so you could pick up a 2002 or thereabouts set on ebay fairly reasonably.

As my world collection is pre-1950, and I'm not all that concerned about prices, I picked up the two volume Scotts set (green books) for 1955 on ebay last week for $15. I've already used them several times to augment pics/descriptions in the Scotts Big Blue.

Amazon has extensive listings of catalogs. You just have to have a little time and patience. I got a world wide set, one volume at a time for 2009 for about 8 dollars a volume except the AB volume, which contains the US listings, It went for 20 dollars plus.

Also shipping from Amazon is very reasonable. $2.99 per volume.

Wonder if Amazon has a "layaway" of sorts, so that all volumes you buy over a month's time can be shipped together, for even less money?

whether you like them or not, Scott is the definitive publisher of US stamp catalogs. There are other specialized ones. Durland for plateblocks, Brookman, etc.. the 2013 specialized catalog of US stamps is the one to get.

The Scott CLASSIC is for the world up to 1940...

I just happen to have a copy of the 2013 specialized, 2013 US specialized, 2012 Durland and a set of Brookmans for sale. I will probobaly be listing them in the buy/sell/trade section after I dispose of my collection.

Here is a 2010 Specialized right now with a starting bid of $9.99 + $6 shipping with zero bids. A very good snipe candidate.

Thanks for all the info people. I just purchased one even tho I have it on my ipad there is more in the book than the one on my ipad. I have been busy 3 weeks straight sorting and pricing stamps for sale and not too far in the future I will be selling all 8 books of about 10,000 stamps. A lot of very nice MNH, Unused NH and really nice used ones. A lot of Fancy as well. Once I get them all in order I will post some of them. Thanks again GURU's

I tend to purchase a Scott Specialized every 3 or 4 years and sell older one on ebay. Best if you buy new, wait until free shipping is offered along with discount then you won't loose as much when you sell.
