Started seeing a new spray on cancel in today's mail. Appears to be four windmills with a sun on the right. Anyone know what this is supposed to be commemorating? Or any other details?

I believe the special ink jet cancel is commemorating Earth Day 2013. It is being reported the EKU is April 4 or 5. What is the date on your example? Can you post a scan of it? |

I don't have scans yet, but I have yet to see anything earlier than the 4th. I have some from both St. Louis and Springfield, MO. Thankfully, most of what I have seen of these have been very legible, a nice change for a spray on |

I received one in today's office mail from Omaha. I'll try to post a scan tomorrow. |

I like this one and hope to receive one on a stamped envelope rather than a meter... |

I needn't have worried... all the stamped office mail I received today used this cancel. Here is a great one on the Liberty flag - looks like fireworks: I'm kind of a tree hugger, so I like this one with the Trident Maple bonsai: |

I just received mail with this spray on. Only thing legible is the date. If you didn't know, you would have no idea that they are wind turbines. Dan |

Remember this thread about the Earth Day 2013 postmark? Apparently there was some controversy behind it according to the article link below ... and someone (not the USPS) is supposed to be paying all costs for it: http://watchdog.org/82291/earth-day...d-opponents/I wonder if anyone has yet found out who was the responsible party for it and whether or not it conformed to the USPS policies about it? At least the article does suggest that the postmark was in place only through May 1, 2013. If there are any later usages out there, scanned examples would be of interest to postmark collectors, I'm sure. |

I know I've seen some after the date as well, but I did just get one today with the cancel. It's a civil war stamp so it's not as clear as others would've been. Olympia WA Jun 27th. |

Another news article about these Earth Day 2013 postmarks: http://www.laconiadailysun.com/inde...at-windmillsSo perhaps this serves to explain the reason for the postmark usage: Quote: "Howell explained that the cancellation, which depicts four wind turbines to the left of a shimmering sun above the message "Earth Day 2013" is a "special cancellation" authorized by USPS in Washington. "That symbol is used nationally to indicate that we are a green company," he said. "It has nothing to do with us. We have zero say over cancellations."" |

We're well past Earth Day 2013, but Cleveland, OH is still using the Earth Day slogan cancel as of August 7, 2013 ... as pathetic looking as it may be: |
