Amazing. Of course, the Canal Zone never had a "Certified" or a "Special Delivery" stamp, so it was U.S. stamps, or nothing. Still, I'd have guessed $10 tops. I have several examples of mixed franking, but nothing so elaborate - maybe I should stick them on ebay. |

And the CZ post office had the US stamps, certification paraphernalia, and special delivery rubber stamp right there in the drawer. |

Maybe this is obvious, but I think the high bidding is not due solely to mixed franking, but to Certified and Specical Delivery services, properly franked, on the same cover. |

Yes. From among a few dozen such banking covers that came from what was probably the estate of a former collector, this one stood out, though others listed are selling, too. |

UPDATE: This auction ended a short while ago, and much to my astonishment at $217.75, when it looked as if it had topped out earlier at $42.25.
Three bidders made nine bids, with the serious action, as happens on desirable items these days, near the very end. |

The thing is, they will probably never see anything similar, and those who really wanted it, knew it. |

The combination of Certified-Special Delivery is very seldom seen. Adding Air Mail and from CZ makes it a truly special cover. |
