ILS: There are four stamps with that basic design - the key features are: 9 - "TEN" CENTS 10 - Frameline around stamp 11 - Scrolls at corners are furthest out 12 - Scrolls at corners are embedded in a wider framed area (note especially lower right corners of the two stamp designs for the differences)
Hope that helps. C. |

Hey Thank You both! Very helpful indeed.I noticed on the scan that the #12 looks from the reverse like it has a fold but I can't see any evidence from the front? Is this very common?
James! I got your stuff in this week so I'll put it out in the box tomorrow morning for you! -Jeff |

Cheers Jeff! A real expert will be able to break those two stamps down even further - colour variations and printer (there were two different printers on these stamps, I believe).
Enjoy! |

James what was giving me trouble is that images of the same scott number are different. Even from the same plate so I was really trying to wrap my head around it. I thought the first one was a 10 almost certainly...then an 11...and back and forth. (I didn't see the price tag that's attached to the #10 when this was going on...lol) So these are a mite harder than I thought! Thank you again! -Now to get a red jack! :) |

Two different firms printed "11 & 12", first by Archer & Daly (Richmond, Va) and then by Keatinge & Ball (South Carolina). Both stamps shown appear to have been printed by Keatinge & Ball, the dark streaky gum and the heavy inking are the usually tell tail signs. |

Thank you. I just got a specialized catalog from the library today, an old one (2001), but the info is still good. I looked these up. |

I have a question about confederate issues. My daughter asked if I was going to use them to mail letters -she's only 5- and I said no that they was very old and she asked if you still could? I said probably not but that got me thinking, I know that the early US issues was demonetized but never read anything about the confederate issues going that way. Does anyone know if they was officially demonetized or not? Thank you. |

The Confederacy was the only group to recognize those stamps as valid proof of prepayment of postage. There was no need to "demonetize" them, as they never were monetized by the US or any other government. Some examples: - A Union prisoner, sending a letter to relatives in the North, would need to have a US stamp placed on the envelope once it crossed the lines (usually at Fort Monroe). Otherwise, it would be sent US postage collect. - No foreign government recognized the Confederate stamps as valid, as there were no postal treaties between the Confederacy and other countries. There are no International rates prepaid by Confederate stamps. - As far as the US government would be concerned, they are "Cinderellas," with as much postal validity.
As a side note, the same could basically be said about the US Postmaster Provisionals. Only the local postmaster could recognize these stamps as indicating prepayment. A letter mailed from the city that issued the Provisional would be marked "PAID" when it entered the mailstream. This "PAID" marking would tell the other city's postmaster that postage had been paid - not the stamp. There are letters mailed from Boston to NY with NY Postmaster Provisionals on them. Boston would treat them as mailed postage collect, but they would be marked "PAID" and delivered without further charges when they reached New York.

Great info chip! Thank you very much. I figured as much and really just wanted to see what actually happened. So they wasn't monetized to start with as far as the North was concerned. |
