I hope we have some Cape of Good Hope experts in the Community! Here is a 1902 cover from Caledon to Philadelphia. It took 28 days to make the journey! Is there a catalog for this cover? I would love to get an idea as to its value. Much thanks!

I'm no expert and own only a few COGH stamps. I'd suggest looking for comparables on ebay. I had a quick look and would guess your cover would sell for something in the $10 - $35 range. However, with covers, only someone with much more knowledge could opine on any extra value that might be created by the cancellations. I'm no help on that topic. You might also do some research on the addressee. I've recently purchased a couple of covers for small amounts that proved to have been addressed to or from near celebrities. |

My retail estimate would be $7 to $10. There's nothing unusual about the cover, and the town of Caledon still exists, it's not a DPO. On the other hand, it seems strange that a TransAtlantic registered letter could be sent for only 1˝ pence. |

I thought the registration fee alone would be 4d. Anyone know if that fee dropped after 1898? |

the rate paid was 6 1/2d, a 1/2d. stamp and a 6d. stamp. 2 1/2d. for ordinary postage plus 4d., for registration,

I should've checked the pix! 2-1/2 d. was the overseas rate from 1892 on, according to my notes. It is interesting how precipitously the postal rates dropped over the last two decades of the nineteenth century. |

None of this explains why this Registered cover went at a fraction of the proper rate. I originally said $7 to $10, but will now bump that estimate into the $30 to $40+ range as material for a specialist. It belongs in a South African auction. One of those oddities that represents pennies from Heaven, and you launch it into the marketplace before they find another one. |

By golly, you are right. I read the "six" as a "one" because it is cancelled with a D (?) and the image would not enlarge, and (on the close-up) the color's about the same as a One Penny stamp.
Sorry about that. Back to my $7 to $10 estimate.
=================== edit; To clarify, the stamp on the original cover looks purple or lilac, but the close-up of the corner looks completely different, like the carmine or rose of a 1d. stamp. |
