What about city/town precancels on "modern" US issues? Didn't I recall it being posted here that some (most) of the precancels on modern issues were merely "courtesy" precancels and had never really been used for their intended purpose through the mails, but were merely produced for collectors? It seems to me that auction sites such as
ebay has a proliferation of these sort of things for sale.
