And I am sitting in a hotel without any catlogs handy either. U58 is pink on white paper U59 is pink on buff. Same pink but some shade varieies happen, either due to exposure to light or minor variations in ink formula or differences in the amount of ink applied. White runs from bright white to creamy white and is often misidentifed as amber, buff, oriental buff, even manila. Manila is a type of paper, not really a color. Now, blue paper is always blue except when it is purple. Amber runs from pale yellow to canary. Oriental buff always has a touch of pink. Cream paper varies. Paper colors are only consistent within a given issue and watermark and that is not always correct. Except for manila, paper color comes from the basic ingredients and the addition of color. Early envlopes were on white or buff and buff was anything that was not white.
