Let me preface this by saying that I know these are in poor condition, but am wondering if there's any resource available online to verify what Scott number these would be? I am going to see if I can order a Scott's book online, but is there any website that has all of the Cut Square's. I am guessing it's the dye color that makes one more valuable than the other, and am not sure how to even tell. Any help/info would be appreciated. I know these probably aren't worth anything, but I want to be sure.

I'm not a cut square specialist and many of the details would have to be scanned at much higher resolution to confirm the intricate details that identify varieties within each type, but from initial appearance I would say your cut squares are:

Row 1: #1) U277; #2) U277; #3) U231; #4) U46; #5) U311
Row 2: #1) U294; #2) U277; #3) U113; #4) U227; #5) U314
Row 3: #1) U294; #2) U294

If I'm wrong with that identification, I'm sure some others will correct me.

As to reference material, I have taken the information from the Scott Catalog, but for specialty collectors, there are much more detailed reference books that identify cut square varieties in much more detail.

Of all of the cut squares posted, I believe the 4th example on the 1st row is the most desirable, as a U46 it catalogs for $24 in my 2011 Scott Catalog. Of course, actual sale prices on the secondary market are much lower.

I prefer to use the United Postal Stationery Society (UPSS) reference. The new reprint is in color and is a must for the "U" and "W" collectors.
