The "proofs" won't get listed in Scott, and as someone else said "These are not proofs, but new marketing gimmicks". They got the idea from New Zealand.

First time they announced this issue, it was for the opening of the Postal Museum, or dedication of such, or something dealing with it. Compared to most museum gift shop items, I had commented that the sheet is somewhat reasonable.
Also, I recall that 2 dollars was supposed to be about the inflation adjusted price of the original issue of the stamps in todays issues.

An inflation calculator website I just visited suggests that a 24 cent stamp in 1918 has the equivalent buying power in 2013 of $3.60 (adjusted for inflation). So it would seem the idea that the $2 denomination for the Inverted Jenny reprints doesn't quite fit that claim.

Yakboomer, I had no idea that the USPS has an E-Bay store! Yeah, they need one!
But I do not want to pay $1.25 extra for stamps that ought to be available at the post office!
Thanks a bunch for pointing this out though! Peter

I wonder how the USPS will handle negative feedback? Probably it will give them a good laugh.

One point, on the $1.25 shipping - how much gas does it take to drive to the Post Office?

The collectors edition product link provided at the start of this thread still (as of 08/02/2013) offers no price, but the USPS has recently added a new line suggesting that the product will be limited to no more than 5000 copies:

Yakboomer, I am retired and live about a mile from the Post Office. Next to the PO is the Kroger where I shop on Wednesdays since they give a 5% "young persons" discount. I always try to do all my business on that one day!

Yeah, I know. Isn't that ridiculous?! Who has that kind of money for what is essentially a worthless piece in terms of a philatelic collectible (as it won't be listed in the Scott Catalog).

I previously posted the following on another thread about it under the 2013 US Stamp issues, but I'll repeat it here, too:

Quote:
Back to the Inverted Jenny collector's edition piece. Has anyone noticed that collectors may order up to ten (10) units? That's $2000, plus shipping! Who has that kind of interest in such a thing?

It's also not clearly stated in the USPS advertising, but the booklet that comes with the piece is "soft cover" ... so you pay $200 apiece for the "collector's item" and you don't even get a hardcover book out of it!

It's being reported on another stamp board that the USPS expects these things to "sell like hotcakes" and that the item will go off sale on October 15, 2013 regardless of how many units are sold. Only time will tell, I guess, if it proves to be a popular item, but at that price it's not a collectible I'm planning to buy!

I don't know why but I buy most every new stamp. I used to buy the year sets but have done away with that and the other high priced collector kits.

Peter; Just as a side note: I, too, am originally from Charleston, WV, and graduated from Stonewall Jackson HS in 1965 and WV State University (formerly WV State College), in Institute, WV, just outside Charleston. Both my daughters and my grandchildren still live there. I didn't mean to throw a curve in the thread, but Mountaineers always stick together, so I just had to say something. Tell your wife I said hello! Larry

I stopped to get some stamps at the local post office today. He asked me if I wanted to see something and of course I said yes. He had the new Jenny's in stock. They look pretty cool but of course I can by any until Monday.

I collect proofs and can't understand why they would call these proofs if they are intentionally printing them for collectors?! It really defeats the purpose of it it being a true proof does it not? sort of a catch 22.

Here's something new in the marketing arena being announced for the issuance of the $2 Inverted Jenny Reprint:

Quote:
The Postal Service is using a special process for the release of 2 million, sheets, each individually wrapped in a sealed envelope within a clear plastic shell.

According to Stamp Services and Corporate Licensing Director Susan McGowan, the special preparation is part of a promotion to "create excitement when opening the envelope and for other reasons that will be announced at a later date."

USPS is asking retail staff not to open the plastic shell protecting each sheet prior to its sale. Instructions on the wrapper advise customers not to purchase stamp sheets that are not properly wrapped.

I couldn't figure out why the wraps, but then again I didn't care to find out why either. My local received 50 sets which isn't bad for a town of under 500 people. I think my PM actually said they go on sale Sunday. So if you have one of those places that are open on Sunday you may be able to get them over the weekend.
