Just for the fun of it, I added to a recent SFS order a strip of 25 of the 5-cent American Toleware Coil "Reprint" that is listed in the current edition of USA Philatelic.

Here's a comparison of the stamp below the original 2002 version. The original printing (top strip) has a noticeably darker background than does the reprint (bottom strip). Also, the reprinted variety contains no backnumbers. Finally, in the reprinted variety there is slightly more space between the bottom of the stamp image and the date:

Here's a close up of the PNC's:

Wt1, according to the PNC3 magazine "Coil Line" all the items that you mentioned could be normal differences occurring even in a single printing. The one major difference is the lack of backnumbers, but one needs quite a long strip to show that! Peter.

OK, I was asleep when I read Wt1's thread! You mentioned the lack of backnumbers! The only item I have not been able to check is the tagging. Does anyone know if it is the same or not? Peter.

I wonder is Scott will issue a major catalog number for this. Other stamps with different background colors have gotten major numbers.

WT - the question is whether there is any difference in the spacing between the top of the black year date and the bottom of the black A in American - a difference in the spacing between the black year date snd any design element of any other color is irrelevant as a simple shift in color registration will cause that spacing to vary.

Apastuszak - the minor shade difference in background color won't even get a minor letter number let alone a major number.
