I am not sure if everybody has this issue but when I click on your images an enlarged image doesn't open up in another window. So, your images of the 3c 1851 and '57's aren't large enough. You may only have one #10 and that is the one with the small Boston PAID. Very few 11's were struck with the small PAID. |

Here is the A25 design Marked Scott #85 (Which would designate it to an D Grill I believe?)
Obverse:

Reverse:

The grill isolated: I used software to tint it to better see the points.

I count 15 points across & 18 points from top to bottom. |

I get the same count, and it seems pretty clear from the scan.
If it counts that way in hand, as I suspect it does, I would call it a #85. The verticality of the grill ridges is clear. The perfs are all intact, and I see no signs of damage, but you may want to dip it to check for thins etc. The cancel is a bit heavy obscuring the face and a fair bit of design, and the centering is off in two directions. So the overall grade comes in as average.
This is a nice example of a D grill and a pleasant surprise if you got in an unsorted batch. Nice catch IMO and worthy of a good cert (from the APS, PSE, or PF). I am sure Bill Weiss would say the same.
BTW I really like that pretty little #65 with the PAID cancel. That one is a honey! |

For some perspective on market for these, here is a pic of an item that sold yesterday in the Regency-Superior auction for about $130 plus 20% for the house. The overall centering and condition grade is about the same as yours, but with a somewhat more interesting cancel. |

The $156 total sale price equates to just under 43% of the 2011 Scott catalog value for VG stamp ($365). |

Sweet. I'm trying to sort out a giant heap of stuff for a friend of mine and there were quite a few sleepers in amongst the group! They'll be stoked for sure! |

Jeff, I'm pretty sure that the stamp in the lower right corner is a type 1 number 25. I can see, I think, the frame line on the bottom of that stamp and if there is frame line it's definitely 25.
Hope this helps, Ray |

Jeff I hope it isn't the case but the columns do not look straight, at least to me, which I hope is not a problem.
Bill Weiss does also expertize the grills for APS so I would send it to him if I were you. Also, is the stamp small? Could have also had some repair / reperfing done?
Still a very difficult stamp. Congrats, and hope it comes out solid w/ a cert.

We'll see cause it's going out soon. I'm I.D.-ing these for a good friend who does not collect US material and got all this stuff plus a pile of other stuff like some 90 cent Commodore Perry's Banknotes and other great stuff too! She just emailed me and said Quote: "I have at least 2 more display cards with some others, like a #128 used no grill, 298, 299 mm 123, 36 no grill and a couple others including a r135 inverted" (whatever that means?) all for like 50 bucks...Don't that just piss you off some? Also ray would you pleas assist me looking over them since you're obviously VERY well qualified for the task at hand and it should be a lot of fun!- right? |

A sincere thank you Ray. I'm gearing up to move so I'll be a bit more quiet on the forums till the school year starts and the move settles down. It's a local move so shouldn't be too awful long anyway? -Jeff |
