American Letter Mail Co. Stamp I.d. Please?

I just received some things in the mail and among them is a private post or carrier stamp that I have never seen in this color. Usually they are black are they not? This one looks vermillion? I don't currently have access to a Scott specialized catalog and would very much appreciate an ID if possible? Thank you very much. -Jeff

Scott Specialized says this stamp (5L1) has been extensively reprinted in several colors.

This isn't an original (or a reprint, or a trial color proof,) it's one of the forgeries. I don't have the Lyons book in front of me, but you'd probably be able to determine which forgery it is from that excellent reference (many of the forgeries were also issued in multiple colors including reds and oranges.)

Thank you. I think I run across this in a lot a few years ago and dug up this old thread (with added new scan) but had never established it's origin eg: original, reprint, forgery, etc... So I would thank you greatly for any information. -Jeff

Looking at my Lyons reference this morning, it looks like Forgery C, which has a number of matching characteristics including rounded eagles tail, eagles wing showing 5 serrated feathers at the bottom edge, the "O" in "CO" touching the right frame line, the footstroke of the "2" in "20" not touching the left border, the corner pegs showing as a white skeleton outline filled with fine horizontal lines, etc.

This forgery is known in both red and red orange (among other colors. I think yours could be either, but probably red.) It's lithographed (not engraved like the original) on white wove paper. Lyons attributes this forgery to Scott. Hope that helps.
