It's always distressing when I see these things offered for sale on ebay. Once this gets sold into private hands, does this mean we will see a proliferation of "fake" precancels from Englewood, Ohio?
Probably little risk. Members of the society have taken - the oath, not to make printings with these things at home. There are a few remaining devices in obscure post offices which are 'fair game'. The precancels made from this would have a book value of 0.25 USD, so very little financial significance. Nice to see pictures of what the 5x5 PSS704 device looks like.
I have just placed the high bid on this device and if I win it will be donated to the APS. This will both preserve a piece of history and remove the device from mischievous hands.
