40c Inland Exchange Help

OK, I have zero knowledge of many stamps, but I keep finding ones in Grandma's collection that catch my eye. I very much value the opinion of many of the Revenue Collectors on this forum.

Here, I have a very poor copy of this issue (off center, thins, etc.) but am most interested in the inking quality. How or what would you call this specimen? Pretty ugly at the top center, left side, and brown dots throughout. My other copy is much cleaner.

This is an example of what is usually called a "rusty plate". There was some kind of corrosion on the plate in this position, and the ink shows it off. They are fun to find, and people certainly collect them as plate varieties, although they add little additional financial value to the stamp itself.

I'm new to Revenues, what was Inland Exchange used for?

For things such as a promissory note that was NOT either "at sight" or "on demand". Those types were subject to the 2 cent "check tax". I don't have my reference works with me at the moment, so I can't give more specific information at the moment.

I also thank revcollector, and revenuecollector too. I have collected revenues for a long time, but mostly in isolation, just buying what I liked and could afford. I did read what I could find about revenues, but I feel like I have learned more in the last two months on this board than I learned in the previous ten years.
