Isn't Hydes a city in Manchester England? This may be an precancel from that city. Can you upload a pic of it? Gary

Hyde is a town near Manchester. Hydes isn't.
And besides, British POs don't precancel.

There are a number of companies in Britain, and no doubt abroad too, called Hydes, and my guess is that what you have is a security overprint, not a precancel, but UNTIL YOU POST A PICTURE we will not be able to tell you.

Hello Bamra1,
Are the companies named generically "Hydes" or is that the name of the person who owns them?. Respectfully, Gary

As far as I know there is no national chain of Hydes if that is what you mean.

I imagine that in most cases they will be the family name of the owner or the founder. I live in Bristol, and the best known Hydes here is an Estate Agents.

As it is impossible for a moderator to move a whole topic into another whole topic I have quoted from the Precancel topic 'Hydes' here:

Quote:
Peezils said about the word Hydes : It was used in an article a few months ago in the PSS journal and there was no picture. sounded negative

Can you at least quote the text in full? We can't make bricks without at least a little bit of straw.

In the September 2013 Precancel Stamp Society journal The Forum, I wrote a column about the Jekyll and Hyde that is ebay. I showed pictures that exemplified the two extremes - these were Jekyll's. The parcel post was known to exist from early records but missing from all collections for 80 years. The 5cent is virtually unknown on attached pairs and a block is a spectacular rarity.

Finding them in one month on ebay shows its amazing power to unearth weird and wonderful stuff. Uninformed sellers can get fair prices too, because the pictures tell the [nearly] complete story of what is offered.

These were the Hyde's. Fakes that match no known precancel style. Made in somebody's basement, not a US Post Office product. The seller using the power of ebay to goose profits out of unsuspecting bidders. To refer to these as precancels has many in our hobby hopping mad.

As far as I know, the use of Hydes in the precancel context only goes back as far as Sept2013.
