Hello Everyone First of all best wishes for all. Now offcourse my question, came across this one. It is not in the best shape, but it has a very large grill, or 2. I can not find anything about this grillsize. It looks that the grill is at least half of the stamp. Maybe the hole stamp, but I am not clear with that. Is there anyone with enough knowledge to tell a bit more? I would be glad with any help. Hope the picture is clear enough.

Mar1976, does the grill look different in person then it does in your pictures? What I'm seeing is not a grill that covers the whole stamp or even half. Looks like slightly more then a quarter of the stamp. |

As best I can count on the first scan, I get 12 columns by 15-16 rows. "F" grill. |

Thank you for advise, but the problem is the rest is almost fadeded. I am almost hole day trying to get it good on a picture, but that is not so easy. I am sure the points are more than what is to see on the picture. I know there is always something a mind want to see , but quit sure my eyes not been foold. I hope I can proof it with a good picture, as soon as possible. |

I count 12 horizontal by 17 or 18 vertical.
it's "Whole day" not "hole day". You dig a hole. A fraction is a part of a whole.

The 15-cent Lincoln is only known on the Z,E and F grills. Only 2 copies of the Z grill known: 13 or 14 columns by 17 or 18 rows AND the grill ridges must be horizontal. E grill is 14 columns by 15 to 17 rows. F grill is 11 or 12 columns by 15 to 17 rows. E and F grill have verticle ridges. There are 12 columns (visible) on your stamp's scan--it can only be an F grill. There is some excellent info. on the Siegel Auctions web site explaining grills. www.siegelauctions.com >tools & resources >siegel encyclopedia >1867-68 grilled issues AND/OR >1868 Z grill. You can also check www.1847usa.com >grills on 19th. century U. S. stamps for some additional info. If you are seeing more columns than 12, you may want to get Bill Weiss to look at it if you think it may be a Z grill |

Save your money, if it clearly has 12 vertical rows, it can only be an "F" grill (#98). It should have 14 vertical rows to be either an "E" or "Z" grill. And to be a "Z" it must have points that have horizontal tips, like this ---------. All other female grills have vertical points like this ||||||||. |

Thank you.
I am a newbee and will not go against your opinion. But with all do respect, look at the right of the stamp. Close next the second row from below.
It is very hard to see on this pictures, becausse the resolution is 320. But there are 100% sure points for 2 more rows. I have better pictures but can not place them on the web.
If there is anyone who wants to have better pictures, sent me pb with email adress.
I am no gold digger or whetever, but the grill also show --- lines.
I am not saying it is a Z grill, but it is not an F. It is a stamp that comes out a collection I bought.
Thanks everyone. |

Quote: what you need to do is.... Take a #2 pencil..... spread some lead on paper....brush finger over lead..... gently transfer finger (with lead) to grill. The grill will show better....
My comments from another post about grills... |
