Here is something I found, I want to share with you: an old letter from the old German state of Baden, sent on 13th Sept. 1856.

Looks pretty normal from the outside:

But now have a look what's inside:

Now I would be really happy if someone could tell me, what THAT'S supposed to mean

Looks like some kind of picture-based code.

It sure does.

But above the picture, there's something written which I read as "Unterschrift" ("Signature"). So maybe it's the name of the sender somehow encoded?
But then again, what use would it be to send a letter containing nothing but a date and a hidden name?

wow, that is cool :)
It looks like what we call in the Netherlands a rebus. (I believe it is the same word in English)
But even when it is supposed to be a rebus, it does not make much sense.
As far as my German knowledge goes, the last line reads Zirkel-Ohr-Hund-Pfeil. Z-O-H-P? Does that mean anything? It does not look like a name, but perhaps I took the wrong words. It really is intriguing.

Interesting.

I have no solution, however.
