I'm sorry if this has been asked before I didn't know where to look for the answer. My question is how do you identify stamps that all look alike. Such as scott number 7, 8 & 9. I looked and looked at different books and such and I ended up just getting all confused.

Hi carabop. There are lots of slight variations in some of those early US stamps, and you've picked a doozy. I know several members here on SCF have made a study of those Franklins. You should use the search engine up above and try searching under US Classics. For starters though there are a couple of great US sights. One in particular tackles this issue. Check out Swedish Tiger on the web. http://www.theswedishtiger.com/x1851a.htmThe other sight you should definitely book mark is this one. http://www.1847usa.com/1851identifier.htm |

The 1¢ Franklin stamps are probably the most studied US Stamp due to their complexity. There are very minor differences that can skyrocket the value and some of these are very difficult to tell apart by the majority of us. There is literature available if one were inclined to head down this dark and expensive path :) |

The only thing I know for sure is I have a used one and it does not have any perforations but don't know where to put it in my album. It is hard to tell also because of the cancel. Thanks though. |

If you post a nice high resolution scan of the Stamp we should be able to identify it. |

Hi Carabop,
Select the 'Reply to Topic' at the end of this thread (Do not use the 'Quick Reply').
Within the Reply to Topis will be selections for adding scans/photos.
Good luck! |

Hmmm well I got the scan up there but I do not know how to make change sizes and such so it is a nice high resolution picture. |

Appears to be a Scott #9. Frame Line re-cut once at the top--can't tell about any re-cutting in the bottom frame line. Stamp cut well into the design on both sides and the bottom. |
