Hello nay sayer, welcome to Stamp Community.

The stamp is Scott #547 from 1920 I believe, looking at ebay listings.

Value seems to vary, depending on gum condition, colour and centering.

Yours is a bit off for centering I think, but having the plate number on a selvage margin is nice, making that a plate single, and that would increase the value somewhat for those that like that.

Others here will know more about that hopefully.

Checkout Scott #547s that were sold at a 2012 auction at this link.

http://stampauctionnetwork.com/v/v63165.cfm

The SCV is $280 (assuming, MNH) and the catalog value price hasn't changed much over the past few years. Yet the price realized for a plate number single was $160 or approximately 57% of catalog value; a single stamp w/o plate number sold at auction for $140 or exactly 50% of catalog value.

The plate number selvage does add a modest premium to the value of the stamp.

I always enjoy some historical perspective. Here is a link to another thread discussing this stamp and plate numbers:

https://goscf.com/t/27153&SearchTer...te+8179

For those living in the past my 1976 Scott Standard shows US Scott#547 as 67.50/12.50. Time marches on.

If you're old enough you could have gotten one at the post office for $2.00

Nice stamp... but, on ebay, for example, 547's are "a dime a dozen" (in the sense)... the market has become quite flooded with them, (as well as 573's-perhaps even moreso), and the bids as of late have been very low, overall...

547's, (as well as 573's), for the most part, are generally nicely centered... and MNH copies are sold widely in the $45 range, (give or take)... and, on good days, a PNS for MNH will double to quadruple the price...

Please point me in the direction where I can purchase a never hinged 547 for under $50.00. The OP needs to provide a scan of the back of the stamp to get an accurate value and if it's been hinged it will greatly affect the value. Also the stamp shown here has a couple short perfs that will affect the value as well.

Thought I could piggyback onto this thread instead of starting a separate one. I've had this used version of the $2 Franklin sitting in my ? area for some time.
The question is the color....sorry..... I know, but I thought it worth a try. Any opinions, besides 'stampcrow's a doofus'?

Looks like carmine lake color, but could be lake - can't be sure just from a scan.

I get your gist, Stallzer! I think the estimate on prices realized were off slightly. From what I can see in my search of ebay sold listings, Fine MNH copies sell in the $50-$75 range, F/VF MNH in the $75-$100, and VF MNH sell for much, much more. I think I paid ~$75 for my VF HINGED copy. I'm still looking for a good deal on a NH copy - but I have no illusions of ever paying $50 for it!

I'd love to offer an opinion! However, since I am color-blind, my time would be better spent looking for a nicer way to call you a doofus

Rileysan, brilliant. Be gentle though LOL

orstampman, my catalog only list 547 Carmine & Black and 547a Lake & Black. I seem to see it as you do. Not Carmine but not really Lake either.

disi, not sure if you caught the fact that the first 2 appear to be the exact same stamp from the exact same seller, nothing fishy about that.....

Let me guess, in April the seller lists it as never hinged, buyer receives stamp and sees hinge mark, returns to seller for refund.

Seller throws proverbial line back in water, hooks another buyer for $68.00, outcome still pending ?
