My catalog states that it is easy to tell with a pair. But I have nothing to compare with this pair. Is anyone able to identify these holes as large or small? Thanks.

I have no references on hand, but I seem to recall that large holes are about the same width as the distance between the holes. So, with that, I think those are small holes.

I too think small holes. While the difference is fairly subtle, I believe the small holes are generally slightly less than 1mm in diameter while the large holes are slightly larger than 1mm. I compared your pair to a large hole pair that I have. Added: And by slightly, I mean very slightly! |

I don't know if this will help or just confuse the issue, but here's a scan of a PSE Certified Copy of the large hole variety: |

I think wt1's posting of the certificate actually helps a bit. The stamps in the cert do appear to me to be the large hole variety. Easy to say, of course, after reading the cert! I'm certainly not an expert, but I would look at the vertical area between the stamps. In the small hole variety, I would guess that the hole takes up almost 30% of the distance. For the large hole variety, I think this is just over 35%. A very rough yardstick, not a scientific certainty. I don't think I could correctly identify my pairs without having both in hand for comparison purpose. |

I have some hole size numbers along this line written down somewhere. Probably on the computer at home. I'll try to find them tonight. Robert |

Great responses thanks everyone! I'll tuck this one away as the small hole version. It'll be nice to have for future reference. |

I'd read on a thread on somewhere about using a sewing needle of a certain guage to measure the holes. If the needle went thru, it was large hole, if the needle didn't go through- small hole. Just can't remember the needle gauge or where I saw the thread. Maybe on here and a search would turn it up.

Is it always a diagnostic that the large holes have partial cuts on the edge and the small holes do not? |

This sounds like a good idea, but be very cautious that you don't try to push the needle through the hole as it could end up damaging the hole. I'll have to check my stamps for this one. (I just have sew much to do ...) |

Quote: Is it always a diagnostic that the large holes have partial cuts on the edge and the small holes do not? I don't recall the source, but if you compare pairs of the 1054A, the perforations are not as well centered in the "large hole" variety but are typically better centered between the stamps in the "small hole" variety. The side-by-side comparison by JLLebbert posted earlier in this thread seems to bear that out. |

I apologize, I should have posted this link earlier on the 1056 series I posted some time ago. There is data on this thread supplied by Russ on hole size for anyone interested. https://goscf.com/t/23928&SearchTerms=large,holeAlso, I have 8 joint line pair in the 1054A small hole variety. The centering on them in either direction is very much a hit and miss. Eagle |
