I always look at these coils from the back (so as not to be distracted by the design).

Stampcrow - you said you don't have anything else to compare to - if you don't have any other 1054A, do you have any other coils from this series?
If not you could always get some cheap examples of large & small holes from other values in the series to use as a reference)

Measuring with my gage, I still find it very difficult. However, I believe that mine is the Large Holes.

Is it always a diagnostic that the large holes have partial cuts on the edge and the small holes do not?

I don't recall the source, but if you compare pairs of the 1054A, the perforations are not as well centered in the "large hole" variety but are typically better centered between the stamps in the "small hole" variety. The side-by-side comparison by JLLebbert posted earlier in this thread seems to bear that out.

Also, there are 12 complete holes in the 'small hole' versus 11 complete holes in the 'large hole' variety. There must be an easier way to figure this all out.

I don't think this is true for every large hole and small hole example of this or any other Liberty series coil.

Eyeonwall is correct, it cannot be determined solely by counting the number of complete holes.
