This was from a lot of locals I just got in from ebay. This stamp in particular had me bidding on the lot. It is large: 3" x 2". Has anyone ever seen one before?

It is similar to those found in the Springer catalog, but this specific company is not listed.

Thanks Revcollector - I bought it because of it's beauty and because I have never seen one before. It sounds like I should probably invest in one of the Spring Catalogs so I just ordered a seventh ed off ebay because it contains M&M essays and Telegraph, What ed contains express or parcel stamps?

The 8th and 10th editions. If one has volumes 6-10 than that would cover everything. The 9th edition is the most difficult to get and the most expensive, it has a lot of the various tobacco and customs stamps.

I do not really have much to add, although I was curious about the name "Charles A. Groth" that appeared on the stamp.

In my research, I found this rather obscure news article about a minor assault incident occurring on the NY "El" (elevated train, for those who may not know) back in 1894. It mentions a Charles A. Groth as being an "Express Agent" with an address of 225 Greene Street, New York.

It wouldn't be out of the question that this may have been the same Charles A. Groth referenced on the stamp. (The occupation, date and location would seem to fit.)

In any event, if nothing else the article gives you an interesting look into a rather foolish encounter dating back 120 years ago:

The "Jefferson Market Court" mentioned in the story is a beautiful Greenwich Village landmark that is now a branch library.
In those days the subway and el used paper tickets handed to an employee (ticket chopper) and dropped into a wooden box.

In 2002 Bruce H. Mosher published a CATALOG OF PRIVATE EXPRESS LABELS AND STAMPS. United states 1839 - 1918; Canada 1841 - 1926.(209 pages)

Under Union Atlantic Express he states that the location is unknown. Thanks to wt1 we now know the were located in New York City. He lists 2 labels.

UATX-S2 10 cents Black/Pink $30.00
UATX-S3 12 1/2 cents Black/White $30.00

A 15cent label is not mentioned.

wow - you guys are amazing. That's great info. Now I want to go search for the 10c and 12.5c versions to complete a set! More and more the thrill of the hunt for this type of material is what I want to do. Thanks for all your help! Bert, can you confirm that the lower denominations are of the same design? Is the Mosher catalog illustrated? Is there any year of issue indicated? I need to make a page for my album.

Mosher catalog is illustrated in black & white.

The 12cent issue is illustrated and it is the same design as the 15cent you have.

You can use the information provided by wt1 and list it as circa 1894.

OK! So here's what my album page looks like. I'll update if I can find any more information about the company. Thanks again!
