Reading this article from last year, I wonder how many counterfeit stamps pass through our hands and how many end up in our collections.

Does anyone have a story about counterfeit stamps, or have any? I have never heard much about them.

I don't have any story about them, but I know the US has had similar problems with modern counterfeit operations, too, especially for those purchases made at convenience stores in larger cities and other non-postal facilities.

Since you have posted your question under "US Stamps" I thought I'd share this ebay listing. Frankly, even with the clear indication that the stamp is counterfeit and must never be used for postage, I'm surprised that the stamp can be sold on the secondary market like this without postal officials making an issue of it.

I have at least two counterfeit U.S. stamps now and I sold a set of seven or eight a few years ago to a dealer friend. If you do a search on SCF there is quite a lengthy and informative thread about counterfeit stamps. Linn's Newsletters have a few articles about them too.

Sorry, I meant to post this on the Canada thread, but I'm glad you enlightened me on the US problem. I know the UK has a terrible problem as well, and that is why they came up with the security notch on their machins. I will post this again on the Canada thread.
