This is one of the most common US stamps. For that reason, I have done my best to isolate from my accumulation the best cancels I can come up with.

You get to vote which one goes in my US album

Smauggie, I did vote, but it is not registering!
Never mind, it started working!

Thanks for voting Peter, and everyone who voted.

For my Scott 899 it was quite clear which cancel I was keeping.

The curvy "7" in the date looks rather unique, doesn't it? Although I think it was rather common on this particular type of machine cancel.

You know I was just looking at that and thinking the same thing.

Operation Torch started the next day, this might have been on it's way to a soldier there. Or it might of been on a "Wish you were here" postcard. Alas, no one will ever know.

If the Red Cross cancel had better perfs, it would have gotten my vote. Instead I chose the 'barely canceled'.

I am already learning a lot from the votes and responses. Keep in mind, I will likely be keeping all of the stamps, but only one gets to go in the album. My Scott 899-901 stamps seem mostly to have cancels from New York.

I see there are a couple votes for the Saginaw oval. I think it is an unusal cancel for this stamp.

It's a registry cancel. With 5,211,708,300 issued, and given the popularity of these issues during the war years, there aren't going to be many unusual cancels on this stamp unless they are from overseas usages.

I acknowledged them as one of the most common US stamps in the first post, yes. Registry or parcel, I agree. I was speaking relatively. Probably not more than 50 million with this type of cancel. ;)

I voted for the red cross cancel. I thought the poll was for the best cancel, not the best condition stamp.

I have to go with the second one; the clean, barely visible cancel. I have a separate binder of Vario pages for fancy cancels and the like, but for my main used album, the cleaner the better.

I voted for number 2, but almost chose 3, the Saginaw cancel, because the #3 stamp has better centering. As a collector of used stamps I often have difficulty deciding between a lighter cancel or better centering.

I agree, and went with 3 for the centering.

edit: 5 is my vote for best cancel, but 3 would go in my album.

I hadn't voted yet thinking it might be needed to break a tie, but #2 is the definite leader. I will act according to the results of the poll Sunday evening (around 9pm board time). I liked the #1 stamp as the outter border of the CDS seems to match the firing arc of the artillery gun.

Smauggie: It's your stamp collection. Use whatever stamp you like. There are no rules in stamp collecting and since we're talking about a common stamp, you can always change it out later on for another better liked copy, as you prefer.

All of our opinions are just that: Opinions. No right or wrong answers here. Use the stamp that you like the best.
