Can any of the British collectors here give me any direction. I have a 1989 Gibbons specialized catalog and a 1997 Gibbons Concise catalog. I have purchased stamps from a company in London for the past few months.
I notice that the prices the company in London charges are considerably lower than the prices in the older Gibbons catalogs. What happened? Did the market retreat in value in the past 10 or 20 years?
Even assuming the Gibbons values are for VF stamps, the prices of the VF stamps from the London company are still considerably lower.
I do realize that when the Gibbons catalog comes out, it is essentially their price list and they will sell for the prices quoted, if they have the particular stamp in stock.
rohumpy. Funny you mention that. Last weekend, while I was at a show, with Phil, I found a MNH set of Gambia stamps. When I checked my 1997 Scotts, it valued the set at $ 7.00. I use the old Scotts as a check list. to see what sets I need.
The dealer had the 102 card marked at 70 cents, naturally I grabbed the set.
I then went to another table, a dealer who had a 2008 Scotts, looked up the set, and it was valued at $ 1.00 MNH
Remember 1988...the Scott catalog prices were sky high and the decision was to revalue them sometimes cutting catalog prices in half...dealers like Marlen took out huge ads saying that he would only use the 1988 catalog in the future..WHAT A JERK !!
