Not my area of collecting, but the winning bid was 67% of CV. That's about what good specimens of highly desirable stamps will bring on ebay, in my experience. I snipe a lot, and will routinely set my maximum bid at 67% of CV. I win most auctions I bid in doing that. FWIW, the winning bidder placed his bid of $1,146 (we don't know how much more he/she was willing to pay) when the bidding was at $351.56. Just prior to the close of the auction, the bidding had reached $995.00 and someone tried to snipe with $1,121.00 in the closing minute, but it wasn't enough. This doesn't look to me like irrational/frenzied bidding. Somebody knew what they wanted, and knew what they were willing to pay for it.

Indeed. This stamp is not currently within my budget (and of course it is the last one in the set I do not have mint), but I think it was a good price. I would be giddy if I were the buyer right now!

I'm not a fan of that seller.

Look at this.

Then look at Lot # 897 in Siegel Sale 1067.

Note that this seller profile is 'Based in United Kingdom' yet ships from the US. Sound familiar to anyone?

Ogstamps is a big time crook and nothing more. Even Bill Langs should be offended to be compared to ogstamps or any of ogstamps' other ebay seller ID's which probably number into the hundreds by now.

Edited for clarity.

Yep, it's buyer beware. I hope the buyer gets it checked before the 45 days are out.

Wasn't aware ogstamps was 'a big time crook'... thanks for the warning...

I fully realize there's a big difference between og and Langs,
(not to mention Langs' alleged "hundreds of ebay ID's)... thanks
for that warning also...

However, Langs is still a broker no matter how you look at it...
he-quite obviously doesn't own the millions of dollars worth of
ebay listings (approx 6,200 of them), and, personally, I don't
hold any great love for him and his business after paying him
$150 for a 'plate block' that's not a plate block (mis-described),
not to mention his listing it as 267 which turned out to be 279B...

I contacted him by ebay message - weeks and weeks ago, (to no
avail), then, while waiting for his response - listing timed out
beyond the Ebay/Paypal limit to file a claim (and limitation on
receiving NEGATIVE FEEDBACK)... and still - no response from Langs...
and... I was, at least being flexible with him, in-that, he could
either refund it or I would take something of equal dollar value...
but, alas... dead silence...

-----------------------------------------------------------------

*** After typing this message, I sent another ebay message to Langs... let's see if he responds to the second one ***

Langs doesn't have hundreds of ebay ID's (I'm aware of 2) - the poster was tring to say ogstamps has hundreds of ID's. And Langs owns more than you think.

But I wouldn't buy from either.

Better to make/file a claim if you have one, get it resolved and get Positive feedback, then make no claim and be out of luck, and dissapointed. The last claim I filed was ignored by the seller, and ebay refunded me the $$ and blocked all feedback. Still haven't heard from them, and they have had sales since.

There is unfortunately, pretty much misinformation in this thread. Bill Langs does not have lots of ebay User IDs. Just two that I know of. And as far as I know, he DOES own all or most of the material he sells on ebay. I believe he is the biggest ebay (United States)stamp seller. And let me add one more thing - Bill Langs is an APS member so MUST subscribe to the Code of Ethics and Bylaws of the society, so if ANY buyer is unsatisfied with how a transaction was handled, whether on ebay, or not, they are free to file a complaint and can find the proper forms to fill out on the APS website. In fact, I would encourage more people to persue grievances with APS when the seller is a member of the society.

As far as the other seller noted in this thread, I think Winston's post might be the most informative.......

Well-known auctioneer Scott Trepel of Siegel Auctions reported on the PhilaMercury board that #13 stamp which was sold in his auction, then resold on ebay after being altered. And despite that being reported to ebay, there is no record of ebay stopping the sale of the stamp nor was the seller suspended.....you be the judge.

It would seem there is some confusion as to who is who on ebay, but it is mostly semantics. If Bill Langs is actively involved in selling on ebay, it is news to me. His accounts are managed by a broker by the name of Stu Katz.

When I last researched it, there were at least five accounts associated with Stu Katz - wmlangs, billsbargainstamps, earlyretire, Stu Katz, and Mark Lane stamps. I personally believe there are more, but I haven't taken the time to find out ...

The following is a post made to SCF by Mr Katz himself.

Quote:
To clear up some confusion I have listed the owners of the following sites.

stukatz-stamps on ebay is my own site.

Mark Lane/Earlyretire - I manage this site for Mr. Robert Simson

William Langs - Is owned by Mr. William Langs (I list & ship Mr. Langs items)

I have purchased from Mr Katz many times over the years and have been mostly happy with my purchases. However, I have seen numerous posts on SCF complaining about issues with this broker. If Langs, et al are good guys with good reputations, they stake their reputation on one man trying to manage many accounts.

Brian,
Bill Langs has sold on ebay for as long as I can recall under "BillLangsbargainstamps".

His ebay store is here http://stores.ebay.com/BillLangsbar...=p4340.l2563

I think you misunderstood my post. Bill exists. Someone else manages his accounts.

Brian,
Yes, that is correct, but he does own the material as far as I know. Stu Katz is a good guy (IMO).

By the way, I think this thread illustrates perfectly why Stamp Smarter will turn out to be such a valuable site and why it is important that all interested collectors and dealers support it. You can read in this thread about a couple of sellers who have had or currently have, problematic listings. But how can the bigger audience out there find out about "ogstamps", for example? Just last night, I had a spare half an hour, and I easily found 6 high value listings with deceptive or misidentified material, posted them on Stamp Smarter and notified the seller. Which, in this case, is a waste of time since in the past when I've notified him he has replied by stating that he does not recognize my service or me as an expert, therefore he will not do anything to correct or cancel his listings based on my reports to him. Therefore, the importance of the site is that it shows the problematic listing, the reporter's opinion(s) and any response from the seller. It allows ANYONE who takes the time to look the ability to see who the problematic sellers are - even though the main thrust of the site is to report LISTINGS, not sellers, the end result helps to paint a clear picture for all to see. So your support is badly needed and sought. Pitch in!..........please.
