Please advise if the vertical mark between the Y in seventy and the C in cents is a cracked plate or a smear or what. Have been looking for an example of the R65b cracked plate and have not found one. Any references out there? Thanks for your time and thoughts.

Hi colonelrklink. I know very little of revenue stamps, but I can tell yours is a very nice stamps! I have experience with cracked plates, and this does not look like what I am used to. The line is too straight in my humble opinion. It would help if you could post a close up scan of this fault?

Yes, I think it is an inksmear. With a bit of luck a revenue collector will ring in, maybe even with a picture of the plate crack on this stamp.

I looked on his site for R65 and he shows no example of the 65b cracked plate. But thanks for the insight Peter! |

This is a very common line on this stamp. It is not a crack, but it is a very frequent occurrence so it might be a very shallow spot in the die. |

Line of ink at the top , as shown, is common to most all of the sheet. Position 52 shows a short but heavy scratch below the stamp design under the letters"EXC" of Exchange, this is a constant variety. Erick Jackson sale 256 lot 57 shows a R65b with a vertical crack into the first "E" of Seventy and a crack southeast through the top right ornament. I have never seen another copy of this, so I can't confirm it as constant. |

How are you finding old auction listings? I have not been able to find them since he changed the website. I can only find prices realized for the last several auctions. |

Dan, I posted before I realized the old auctions are not on his website. I saved a screen capture for my files. I'll see if it will scan and send it along. |
