What if a stamp was on cover and more
valuable on cover than off cover, but
a positive ID could only be made by
lifting the stamp... what would YOU do?

If it was valuable enough I would have an expert lift the stamp, something that has been done many times. Many of the watermarked W-F EDU's have been lifted to be sure it is the correct stamp.

Just for reader's information, I offer a Lifting Service for only $10. Which barely covers my time. I make no guarantees that I can lift it successfully nor that once lifted there may not be fault(s) that were not visible when it was on the cover. I have become rather proficient in lifting stamps like this, so will be pleased to help anyone out who needs a stamp lifted for some reason.

Also, readers may find it useful to read the article I wrote for ebay entitled "Why Have Your Stamps Expertized" which can be accessed through my ebay seller page (wrw1943) by clicking on the "ME" symbol, then the Pencil logo.

Case in point...

Let's say you have a stamp that's that's fairly
rare, but (barely) FVF... SCV is $360 standalone,
(presumably for a decently centered copy, which
this stamp is not) but it's $1200 on cover...
(and) although there is no document inside of it,
there exists a known history with regards to the
addressee... (and) (hypothetically), the cover
complete with the stamp (to the right buyer) might
have a potential value in excess of the $1200...

What would you do?
