The color is right, the date is right... my old 300dpi scanner doesn't show the stamp very well, though...

The toga button on your example has weak lines as does a 482. The 482a toga button has clear strong lines. The exact color is more difficult to determine, so I won't even tackle that one. |

Thanks for your commentary... but the only problem with that logic is that the 482 is Carmine, and the 482a is deep rose... this stamp is deep rose...
I can do a side by side for you of carmine and deep rose, if you'd like... |

The problem with that logic is that the shade is NOT the determining factor here, the design characteristics are. |

There are multiple shades of the 482, deep rose being one of them. As stated, the design characteristics are the key. |

I may be getting myself in trouble again for trying to ID from a scan but it does not appear to have type 1a toga line and button. |

wash_500 ... after the discussion in another thread with Tipzi... I am no longer a believer in the "classic" Ia details... i.e. rope line and button... there are other details which come into play... most especially the process which produced them and the die and plates...
Heretoforth, I'll only accept Tipzi's statements as to what is and isn't a Ia... conventional data, even as perceived to be "long establshed and long accepted" is *not* always the case... |

Quote: There are multiple shades of the 482, deep rose being one of them. Unfortunately, the deep rose 482's are like the weakest 499's and do (not) have strong detail such as this... see below... http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...&_sacat=3461*And*... the 482 Shermack is listed in Carmine *only*... There goes (that) logic... Next... |

Most first issue revenues are only listed in one or occasionally two shades, but any collector of first issues knows that many exist in several different shades most of which were deliberately done. Being "listed" does not automatically prove anything about what is NOT listed. If you want to think that only the shade matters, and not the physical characteristics of the design, more power to you. And if you want to think that the clear photos of the 482A on the PF site, which CLEARLY show those characteristics are meaningless because no one from the PF has written to you personally, again more power to you. Everyone would rather have a $60,000 stamp than a 25 cent one, no matter what they have to overlook to get think they have it. |
