I have this 2c very dark brown, maybe black brown unused with no gum that appears to have soft paper. The stamp clearly has some small flaws, so not looking for input on condition.

SO... I am looking for opinions before I send it in for an expert opinion. Any thoughts?

Dave...
This is not aBLACK BROWN.
That is a distinctive shade....
Plus...Special printings would have proof like impressions.
My opinion.

Thanks, Kevin - good inputs. Yeah, like I said it's at least a dark brown, maybe a black brown. So, wouldn't be surprised if just a dark brown.

Regarding the impression, I agree, it's not proof-like. Then, it's just the paper I am curious about, since the 2c Brown wasn't printed on soft porous paper, and it appears to be on soft porous paper.

Any chance for taking a backlit image? If you can place light source behind stamp with back of stamp towards camera?

If you have a thickness gauge you might want to measure it. This could be a good candidate for double paper, which is a patent experimental Continental tried out for a while.

Don, essayk, thanks for the suggestions. I have measured the thickness and compared it other Banknote stamps and it measures about the thickness of other hard white paper issues (~ 3.25 mils) compared to the soft papers (~4 mils). SO, it appears to be a more common Scott 157, dark brown.

Just the fact that you can see the impression through the back means it cant be a thick soft paper. The perfs aren't soft paper perfs, either.
