hey guys, just found a stamp collection, it has about 10 canadian stamps (2-3c) from the 1910-30's, 20-30 great britain stamps from 3c-20c from around the 1800's-the 1930's and a ton (40 or so) american stamps from 1-20c.
anyone know how I would go about getting this appraised, or if any of you could give me a rough price.
also, what should I be looking for? im hoping to sell it, thanks a ton!

You might want to stick to playing in the symphony orchestra and leave the stamps to the collectors !! |

wow, I didnt expect to be answered with such hostility.
why?
i just asked a simple question, I know nothing about stamps, I found this and want to know a bit about it.
if anyone has anything relevant to add, please feel free to do so, but please dont attack me for not knowing anything. |

I think Philb was just having some fun with your forum name. Philb is pretty cool and your questions seems to have been asked some many times over the last few months you could probably find some help in the same type of questions asked in the old post.
In any event there isn't much information we can use to help you so far. If you would be so kind as to post some of the stamp images I will try to answer your questions.
And welcome and I'm sure Mr. P would say the same. |

bassplayer999... Yes Phil is one of the original grumpier old men. Scan a few of the stamps, and post them to this thread, and we will be happy to give you some sort of value,
By the way, my A Höfner 500/1 "violin bass" is up in my attic |

bassplayer999, as others have stated the best way for SCF'ers to help would be to post a picture. These can be scans or photos uploaded to the site and you will receive a response for identification. Bob I thought I heard violins playing when you were placing bids! |

Welcome to the stamp community, bassplayer999! The standard reference for stamp values is called Scott's Catalogue. It is a large set of seven heavy volumes. Many public libraries have a set you could use to identify your stamps and their catalogue values. However, it you can post some pictures, our members can help you with this task. The value of your stamps will depend heavily on their condition as well as their catalogue value. Generally stamps sell for a discount from catalogue value, and those in poor condition lose most of their value. |

I think a new poster would have a little trouble distinguishing between a joking reply and an apparently serious reply. I have been here on the forum for a while, and I sure don't know anyone here well enough to make the distinction.
Oh, and welcome bassplayer. You never know what may be in even a relatively small collection. Perhaps if you do what some others have recommended, we can help.
I am a pretty avid great britain collector and may be able to help if I can see images of the great britain. |

to philb:
hey, sorry, I realize now it was a harmless statement.
these days on the internet you have to get your back up, cuz everyone seems so hostile, sorry for the confusion.
also, sorry for my snap reply.
no harm done.
hope we can work past this.
also, sorry this is late, I've been busy the past few days with a big client (i run a photography business)
anyways, pictures will be forthcoming tonight. id like to say that the collection is very far from mint, I found it in a dump, and most the the stamps are used and taped to the book.
hopefully I can still get some keepers out of it though. |

Was it literally in a dump? ie. the garbage or trash heap. Were any of the stamps starting to brown because of the acids in the tape?
I had been given an world wide softcover album from around the 1950's that had a few keepers, but most of them had been stuck to the pages with scotch tape and had damaged the stamps and pages by staining them brown. It was a shame. |

I've been lucky enough a couple of times to find stamp collections at the garbage dump. Both turned out to be kiddie collections, though, with nothing major in them and lots of sand dunes. |
