My Scott 1983 check list has a listing for a #60 1st design 24 cent
dark violet. My 2010 Scott Specialized states that #60 is now 70e trial color . There is no listing for 70e . However , when I turn to the trial color section , it still does not list a 70e but only shows the different color variations including ( in this case) a dark violet. Also, if I am reading this correctly , Scott #'s 55 to 62b for the 1861 issue are 1st design and 63 to 72 are 2nd design. So what's up with this number change and how can it go from 1st design to 2nd design ?

My 2013 Scott Specialized Catalog has a note detailing the change in numbering. It states:

Quote:
The following items, formerly listed here at Nos. 55-62, are considered to be essays or trial color proofs. They will be found in a separate listing between the Essay section and the Proof section of this catalog. Previous No. 58 has been combined with No. 62B.

It then goes on to suggest that Formerly #60 is currently No. 70TC3e.

Formerly #55 is currently No. 63-E11e

Thanks wt1 . I found the section you are referring to in my Scott's.
It is titled " 1861 1st design essays and trial color proofs ".
Unfortunately I am not comprehending what I am reading.

Ok,

There were some changes to the Scott catalog a few years back with regards to what are known as either the "August" or "Premiere Gravures" or "First Designs" of the 1861 issue.

Basically, most of the designs had minor changes to them before the plates went into service, the most noticeable changes were to the 3c and 12c designs.

You should really download from the collectors club the Brookman books (if you don't own them already) as they give a bit more info on these stamps.

With the exception of the 24c and 10c first designs, none of the the original designs were actually postally used, and there's some debate/contention to whether or not what's called #60 was ever actually postally used. Much of the confusion stems from the fact that the 24c first design was never changed.

The 10c first design, #62B, was put into postal use for a limited period of time in late 1861, generally around October, that's why it has an actual Scott #.

I received another one in the mail just today, that had it's Scott number changed awhile back also, but I'm going to start a new topic on it. So excited to own what used to be #66 Lake, and now 66TC.....

My shade collection needed this one......

We need pics! :) Sounds like a nice pick-up although I'm still a bit murky on all the details I would certainly like to see it/them. Respectfully -Jeff

A lot of these stamps got re-listed by Scott as Trial Color Proofs because that's what they really are.

A case could be made for #60, in that the first color of the stamp was indeed postally issued IMO.

But other than the 10c, none of the other first designs were ever sold at post offices and never saw postal use. You can include the 3c #66 and #74 in there as well. Neither of those stamps were ever postally used on commercial or personal mail (I do believe a handful of philatelic non-contemporary usages are known)
